Somnath Temple is one of the oldest pilgrimage centres in India. ‘Som’, the ‘Moon God’, thus Somnath means ‘Protector of the Moon God’. According to a legend, Som got the temple built in the honor of Lord Shiva as it was Shiva who cured the illness, which was inflicted on him due to his father-in-law’s curse. It is one of the most important ‘jyotirlings’ among the 12 existing jyotirlings of India and is first among the twelve Aadi Jyotirlings of India. The temple is located in Prabhas Kshetra in Gujarat. The temple is built at the shore of the Arabian ocean on the western corner of Indian subcontinent. Destroyed and reconstructed several times in the past, the present temple was reconstructed in Chalukya style of Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951. The Pran-Pratistha at the existing temple was done on 11th May 1951 by then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Prabhas Kshetra is also the region in which, it is believed that, Lord Krishna left his mortal body.

Soma is the name of the Moon, the son-in-law of Daksha.Once Soma had disobeyed certain instructions given by his father-in-law Daksha. Later daksha was ver angry , he cursed him saying “Thu salt wane”. The moon who used to shine full splendor every night till those days then started to shrink. However before  such a cursebrought about an absolute end to the moon, many gods requested Daksha to revoke his curse. Then Daksha asked Soma to take bath in Saraswathi river and asked to pray lord Shiva. Hence at Prabhasa, Shiva came to be known as Somanath, the Lord of the Moon.
